Old School Ice Kacang in Sibu

Today I am going to bring you back to my hometown, Sibu.

I grew up having ais kacang / chendol / sotong kangkung

My childhood was awesome :) so to say :)

Going back to the 80s / 90s.

Ais kacang was made by shaving a huge block of ice on a wooden bench equipped with a shaver.

Try to zoom in on the photo below.

This is the only stall operator I know that is still making ais kacang / cendol using this old school method.

Stall number 103 at Sibu Central Market (first floor).

Of course, the taste is different that the shaved ice churned out from a machine.

It has that quintessential bold and rough flakiness, that withstand the heat in Malaysia longer than the ones churned out from machine.

The ais kacang itself will transport you to the 80s and 90s, reminiscing that same sort of excitement and flavour when you were served with ais kacang.

And there is sotong kangkung as well.

The bean curd is the tastiest here.

 And there is rojak too.

Whichever tickles your fancy.

I visit this stall very often whenever I am back in Sibu, it is just across from my father's shop.

Very cheap and affordable, a far cry from where I am staying now

Say hi if you happen to bump into me at this stall this coming Chinese New Year :)

I think I've had these here before - I remember the ice shaver.
